Kimberley M'Carver, Iris Dement's first & second albums, Kimmie
Rhodes: is the chain of associations started by Marilisa's album Water under
the bridge. Central Texas Marilisa thus stands firmly right in the middle of a rich
tradition of female singer/songwriters moving in the prospering borderland between country,
folk, and blues. Like an early Maria Muldaur she also gives her music some jazz
touch. There she also gives rich proof of her vocal flexibility. Marilisa slides
expressively along the scales, sings with grit, and the attitudes are counter pointed
by
nicely caressing brass and Erik
Hokkanen's weaning gypsy fiddle. But mostly it's a matter of bluesy folk and country. In
these songs Marilisa changes her vocal expression. She turns slightly
navistic, and her
singing gets a more immediate expressive power.
Behind Marilisa we hear musicians like Hokkanen, accordion player,
Ponty Bone, and Jimmy Day on steel. We get some good solos, but mostly
delicate ensemble playing. Magnus Eriksson Paper Svenska
